Finding the Right Home Looks Different for Every Buyer
When people think about buying a home, they often picture things like granite countertops, open floor plans, or a certain number of bedrooms. While those details certainly matter, I’ve learned something even more important after helping buyers over the years. Finding the right home isn’t just about the house itself. It starts with understanding the person behind the home search, listening to their goals, and discovering what matters most to them.
That’s why one of the most important parts of my job happens before we ever step inside a house. It begins with asking questions, listening carefully, and learning what matters most to each buyer. After all, the “perfect home” isn’t the same for everyone.
Finding the Right Home for Every Buyer Starts with Listening
Recently, I had the opportunity to work with two buyers whose experiences couldn’t have been more different.
One was a first-time homebuyer who stands around 6’5″. At first, you might not think height would have much of an impact on a home search, but it absolutely does.
Suddenly, details many of us never notice became important. We paid close attention to ceiling height, low light fixtures, basement clearance, door frames, and even bathroom counter height. While kitchens, bedrooms, and location were still high on the list, making sure the home comfortably fit him every day was just as important.
Although many features can be updated after closing, ceiling height and room dimensions are much harder to change. That’s why taking the time to understand a buyer’s needs makes such a difference.
Sometimes Life Changes the Timeline
Not long after that, another couple came to me with exciting news.
They had always talked about moving into a larger home someday. Then life surprised them in the best possible way.
They found out they weren’t expecting one baby…
They were expecting twins!
As a result, their timeline changed almost overnight. Their focus shifted to finding enough space, a practical layout, and getting settled before welcoming two new family members.
Their priorities looked completely different from my first-time buyer’s.
Neither was right.
Neither was wrong.
They were simply different.
There Isn’t One Perfect Home
One of the biggest misconceptions about buying a home is that there’s one perfect house waiting for everyone.
Personally, I don’t believe that’s true.
Instead, I believe there’s a home that fits your life.
For one buyer, that may mean a finished basement for entertaining. For someone else, it’s a dedicated home office or extra garage space.
Some buyers are looking for fewer stairs, while others need additional room for a growing family. Meanwhile, others are ready to simplify and want less maintenance.
Every stage of life changes what “home” looks like.
The Best Home Search Starts with a Conversation
Before we start touring homes, I want to know your story.
What do you love about where you live now?
What would you change?
What can’t you live without?
What would make everyday life easier?
The answers to those questions tell me far more than simply knowing how many bedrooms you’re looking for.
Because the more I understand your goals, the easier it becomes to narrow the search and focus on homes that truly fit the people who will be living there.
Your Story Matters
Whether you’re buying your very first home, making room for a growing family, downsizing, or simply looking for something that better fits your lifestyle, your home search should reflect your unique needs.
Ultimately, that’s one of the reasons I love what I do.
Every buyer has a different story.
Every journey is unique.
And helping people find the home that fits their story never gets old.
